The old argument of “Is Kefir Healthier For Your Gut Than Yoghurt” is an easy one to answer and it is supported by medical science. Dr Berg explains the reasons for this in the video at the end of the article.
The simple answer to the question of which is healthier, Kefir or Yoghurt, is straightforward, Kefir, specifically Milk Kefir is far healthier for you than yoghurt.
Why is Kefir Healthier than Yoghurt
It is quite straightforward. Yoghurt
- cleans your colon, and
- feeds the bacteria in your stomach. It feeds any bacteria in your stomach, good or bad.
Where Kefir outshines yoghurt is that Kefir
- infuses the good bacteria into your gut, many different strains
- gets rid of the bad bacteria
- introduces heathy yeasts
- gets rid of bad yeasts
- adds more nutriens like
- Tryptophan
- Calcium
- potasium
- B12
- B1
- is easier to digest and
- is the best remedy for candida.
Types Of Kefir
There are two main types of Kefir that are available around the world and they are:
- Milk Kefir
- Water Kefir
There are also many different strains of Kefir with different strains of bacteria and yeast but they all have the same or similar benefits. A serving (250ml) of whole milk kefir contains approximately:
- 145 kcal
- 8.3g protein
- 7.5g fat
- 11g carbs
- 333mg calcium
- 28mg magnesium
- 383mg potassium
- 0.7mcg B12
Vitamins And Minerals
Small doses of Kefir 175ml(6ounces) has a tremendous amount of goodness in them, e.g. (2Trusted Source):

Sourcing Kefir Grains
Most people are totally unaware of Kefir’s existence or benefits to our health so its availability in stores and Chemists has been very limited and relatively expensive. This being said, with a little effort and research, you can find Kefir grains available in most areas. The problem is that many people who now sell the grains do not provide great support later on. This, however, can also be said of the supermarkets and chemists.
When looking for kefir grains, try and find a supplier that actively produces and markets Kefir products. I am not a great fan of the dried commercial grains as some of my customers come to me after having spent a fair sum of money on commercially dried grains that just did not produce as expected and there is no one to go to for help.
Kefir Is Less Work To Make Than Yoghurt
Unlike Yoghurt, which requires heating and a sustained temperature for extended periods, Kefir is a mix and forget, room temperature operation. It is simple to make and does not cost you an arm and a leg for cultures every time you want to make a fresh batch.
